Enrico Serafino
Enrico Serafino has worked from the same cellar in Canale, in the Roero hills, since 1878, when its founder left a landowning family in Canavese at 23 to chase his dream of making "luxury wines" from Piemonte's best vineyards. The estate now belongs to the Krause Gentile family, whose Kyle Krause fulfilled a long-held wish, inherited from his Italian-American mother's love of Italian food and wine, by acquiring the winery. It farms around 60 hectares, partly owned and partly under long-term contract, across Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo, the Alta Langa hills near Cerretto Langhe and the Roero around Canale. Winemaker Paolo Giacosa oversees single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco crus, Roero, Gavi and native Piemonte reds, plus Alta Langa metodo classico spumante, where Zero was the denomination's first pas dosé bottling. The cellar itself, built on three levels with two 19th-century underground galleries, still relies mainly on gravity to move grapes and wine through the winemaking process.

Wines from Enrico Serafino
- Black: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato Bianco 100%, Sweet. Black keeps the full range of Moscato's unmistakable aromas intact, gaining extra complexity, the estate says, from a partly delayed harvest, and its low alcohol makes it an easy, refreshing summer wine.
- Bricco di Neive: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Barbaresco from the Bricco di Neive MGA, named for the hilltop it sits on and made, the estate says, in an austere yet elegant style.
- Briccolina: Barolo DOCG Riserva, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Briccolina, named for the hilltop vineyard it comes from in Serralunga d'Alba, is the estate's most powerful and austere Barolo, released as a Riserva from its oldest vines.
- Carpegna: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Carpegna sits within Serralunga d'Alba on younger, fossil-marl soil, which the estate says gives this Barolo a more open and welcoming character than its other wines from the same commune.
- Cruva: Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG, Barbera 100%, Red. A Barbera d'Asti Superiore from the Monferrato hills near Nizza Monferrato, which the estate calls a contemporary take on a traditional Barbera, built on balanced structure and soft acidity.
- Dosso: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. Named after the Piemontese dialect meaning of Dolcetto, "sweet in its acidity" compared with Barbera, Dosso is the estate's everyday red, aged briefly in bottle rather than wood.
- Erianthe: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato Bianco 100%, Sweet. Erianthe keeps the full, surprising range of Moscato's unmistakable aromas, an easy-drinking, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti the estate recommends as a refreshing summer glass.
- Grifo del Quartaro: Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi, Cortese 100%, White. Made to preserve the freshness and fragrance of vineyards in the heart of the Gavi commune, Grifo del Quartaro benefits, the estate says, from the area's marked day-night temperature swings, which lift its floral…
- M+M 18 Perpetuelle Sbagliato: Alta Langa DOCG, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. M+M 18 Perpetuelle Sbagliato blends a majority of one still vintage with a smaller multi-vintage fraction where older wines, in the estate's words, "educate" the younger ones, a solera-inspired approach adapted to the…
- Maneo: Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi, Cortese 100%, White. Maneo, Latin for "I remain", is named for the long ageing this Gavi undergoes, released only five years after harvest so it can fully express its site.
- Meriame: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Barolo from the Meriame cru in Serralunga d'Alba, which the producer says is stylistically distinct from its other Barolos for its aromatic fragrance, freshness and youthful complexity.
- Monclivio: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. The estate's classic-tier Barolo, blending Nebbiolo from Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra for a style the producer describes as powerfully elegant, shaped by careful vineyard management and oak ageing.
- Oesio: Roero DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Roero from the Oesio site in Canale, made only in exceptional years and in small volumes, which the estate says shows Nebbiolo's finer, more elegant side on this sandy-clay soil.
- Oesio Oltredieci: Roero DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Oltredieci, meaning "beyond ten", is released from the same Oesio vineyard only in outstanding vintages and only after more than a decade of ageing, which the estate presents as proof of the site's potential with…
- Oudeis: Alta Langa DOCG Brut, Pinot Noir 85%, Chardonnay 15%, Sparkling. Oudeis takes its name from the Greek for "no one", reflecting the estate's belief that only the terroir, not the winemaker, is responsible for a wine's complexity; this Brut blends mostly Pinot Noir with a smaller…
- Oudeis Rosé: Alta Langa DOCG Brut, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. The saignée rosé in the Oudeis range, made purely from Pinot Noir, the estate describes as a wine that wins over the drinker at first sight thanks to the delicate colour drawn from its brief maceration.
- Pajena: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A Barbera d'Alba the estate calls elegance made Barbera, built on a balance of acidity, body and minerality around clear, well-defined fruit.
- Parcellaire: Alta Langa DOCG Extra Brut, Pinot Noir 95%, Chardonnay 5%, Sparkling. Enrico Serafino has vinified by individual parcel since the Alta Langa DOCG began, and Parcellaire is a selection of the parcels the estate feels best express the denomination's characteristic edge, with a low dosage…
- Picotener: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Picotener is an old, nearly forgotten Nebbiolo subvariety, prized for its polyphenols and spice, that the estate has a dedicated project to revive on its Canale vineyards.
- Poggio della Rupe: Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi, Cortese 100%, White. Poggio della Rupe's Monterotondo vineyard sits on a gypsum-sulphur soil the estate says gives this Gavi an unusually complex, long-ageing character for the variety.
- Poggio di Caro: Roero Arneis DOCG, Arneis 100%, White. Grown on the sandy soils of the Roero around Canale, Poggio di Caro is the estate's crisp, fruit-forward Arneis, described as representing the younger part of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato UNESCO area.
- Propàgo: Alta Langa DOCG Extra Brut, Chardonnay 100%, Sparkling. The estate's Alta Langa wines are traditionally Pinot Noir led, and Propàgo, named from the Latin for bud or shoot, was its first 100% Chardonnay bottling, adding the variety's breadth to the crisp character its…
- San Defendente: Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Barbera d'Alba Superiore from the San Defendente vineyard in Canale, which the estate calls complex and multi-faceted, with an inviting richness of red fruit aromas and flavours.
- Sanavento: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A blended-vineyard Barbaresco the estate describes as harmonious and elegant, its velvety tannins and soft acidity shaped by a careful fermentation that keeps the grape character intact.
- Serralunga: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A communal Barolo from the Serralunga d'Alba MGA, which the estate presents as its contemporary reading of the commune's classic traits of longevity, austerity and complexity.
- Tovasacco: Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A Nebbiolo d'Alba the estate calls an expression of both the grape and the sandy Roero soils it grows on around Canale.
- Zero: Alta Langa DOCG Riserva, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. Made only from Pinot Noir since the 2004 vintage, Zero was the first pas dosé ever produced under the Alta Langa DOCG and remains, in the producer's words, the wine that best represents its Alta Langa range.
- Zero 140: Alta Langa DOCG Riserva, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. Produced from the 2004 vintage on, Zero 140 was the first Alta Langa aged to such an extreme, resting almost 12 years on the lees before its single disgorgement per vintage, which the estate calls its fullest…
- Zero de Saignée: Alta Langa Rosé DOCG Riserva, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. A rosé made by the saignée method from 100% Pinot Noir, Zero de Saignée carries the same house style as the estate's other Alta Langa Riserva pas dosé wines, with the variety's fruit and structure drawn out by the…
- Zero140 de Saignée: Alta Langa Rosé DOCG Riserva, Pinot Noir 100%, Sparkling. The saignée-method Rosé counterpart to Zero 140, aged almost 12 years on the lees, which the estate says tames the power of Pinot Noir into a long, complex expression of the Alta Langa terroir.
