Meriame

By Enrico Serafino, Roero, Piemonte, Italy

Enrico Serafino Meriame

A single-vineyard Barolo from the Meriame cru in Serralunga d'Alba, which the producer says is stylistically distinct from its other Barolos for its aromatic fragrance, freshness and youthful complexity.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby red with faint purple reflections, a broad, intense and complex bouquet where a youthful character from whole-bunch maceration meets tertiary aromas of rose, violet, raspberry, liquorice, spice and tobacco, and a broad palate with tight but still vibrant tannins and a long, characterful finish.

Pairs well with

Game, roasts and aged cheeses, also enjoyed after dinner.

Hand-sorted bunches are chilled with dry ice to limit oxidation and sulphite use. Part is destemmed and gently crushed after a second hand-sort, the rest goes whole-bunch into the fermenter for carbonic maceration, with no use of screw augers throughout. Fermentation is medium-to-long with little movement of the solids to preserve the whole bunches, followed by about 26 months' ageing in a 1,000-litre oak cask.
