Scagliola - Sansì
Scagliola is a four-generation family estate on San Siro hill in Calosso, in the province of Asti, on the last hills of the Monferrato where it meets the Langhe. Camillo Scagliola set up the winery in 1936, and for decades the family focused on Moscato, selling other wines from the cask. Today about 40 hectares of vines sit at 320 to 380 metres, farmed with low yields and picked by hand between late August and mid-October. Barbera is the core: La Birba, Mati, Frem, Sansì, Sansì Antologia and the Nizza Forvia, alongside Moscato d'Asti, Dolcetto, Cortese, Grignolino, Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Brachetto and Alta Langa sparkling. Every label is painted by the artist Massimo Ricci. The soils here are a mix of sand, marl and limestone, and Nizza DOCG is made just over the hills at Agliano Terme.
