Corriere's 100 Best Wines 2027: Piemonte's 16, from Brunate to Gattinara

Sixteen of Italy's hundred best wines this year come from Piemonte, according to the ranking at the heart of the Corriere della Sera's annual wine guide. Barolo leads the way with nine bottles, Barbaresco adds five, and two wines from outside the Langhe make the cut: a Grignolino from the Monferrato and a Gattinara from the north. Fifteen of them are on our site, so you can read up on each one before the guide reaches the newsstands.

What the guide is

"I migliori 100 Vini e Vignaioli d'Italia" 2027 is the thirteenth edition of the guide, written by Luciano Ferraro, deputy editor of the Corriere della Sera. It has two halves. One is a set of portraits of 100 wineries and producers, which Ferraro has said are chosen less for being the best than for having a story worth telling through their wines. The other is the ranking of the 100 best wines, which is James Suckling's "Top 100 Wines of Italy", compiled with Aldo Fiordelli after tasting about 7,000 wines over the past year, as Vinetur reports.

The guide will be presented in Milan on 29 October and goes on sale at newsstands on 30 October. WineNews published the ranking, the producer list and the special awards on 22 October. New this year, according to WineNews, are food pairings from a group of well-known chefs and a selection of ten century-old vineyards chosen by the pruning specialist Marco Simonit. None of the ten vineyards is in Piemonte, and the number one wine is a Tuscan: Eredi Fuligni's Brunello di Montalcino 2021, which Vinetur says was cited for its quality, value and availability.

Three Piemonte wines in the top ten

Piemonte's best placing is number 3, Roberto Voerzio's Barolo Brunate 2022. The estate first made this single-vineyard Barolo from Brunate in La Morra in 1988, and describes a spontaneous fermentation and ageing in used barriques and 15-hectolitre casks.

At number 6 is the plain Barolo 2022 from G.B. Burlotto in Verduno. This wine is the estate's classic blend of several Verduno vineyards, among them Breri, Neirane, Rocche dell'Olmo and Boscatto, fermented in open French oak vats and aged in large Allier casks.

Number 10 is the Barbaresco Pajè Riserva 2021 of the Produttori del Barbaresco, the cooperative we profiled earlier this month. The Pajè Riserva is made only in vintages the cooperative considers excellent, and the 2021 ran to 13,333 bottles, bottled in May 2025.

Barolo: seven more

The other Barolos in the ranking spread across five vintages, which says something about how long the best of them are held back:

Barbaresco, Grignolino and Gattinara

Four more Barbarescos join the Pajè. Cascina Baricchi's Rose delle Casasse Riserva 2019 is at number 24 (the estate is not yet on our site). Pio Cesare is at 28 with Il Bricco 2022, its single-vineyard Barbaresco from Treiso. Ca' del Baio is at 35 with the Asili Riserva 2020, and Sottimano at 46 with Currà 2021, from a small site south-west of Neive.

The two outsiders are worth a look. At number 67, Tenuta Santa Caterina's Grignolino d'Asti Monferace 2021 is the long-aged style of Grignolino we described in our Grignolino guide; the estate gives it 30 months in oak and 30 in bottle. At number 74, Travaglini's Gattinara Riserva 2021 is the only wine from Alto Piemonte in the list.

The producers' half

Twelve of the guide's 100 portraits are of Piemonte producers: Cascina Gilli, Ceretto, Cogno, Damilano, Gaja, La Colombera, La Raia, Manzone, Marchesi di Barolo, Pio Cesare, Poderi Luigi Einaudi and Travaglini. Only Damilano, Pio Cesare and Travaglini appear in both halves. The list reaches well beyond Barolo, from Freisa country near Turin to Timorasso in the Colli Tortonesi and Gavi.

Finding the bottles

Several of these wines are made in small numbers or only in some years, so the ranking is more useful as a list of names to look for on wine lists and in enoteche than as a shopping list. If you see the Burlotto or one of the 2022 Barolos by the glass this winter, it is a chance to taste the vintage that put two Piemonte wines in the top ten. Every wine above links to its page on our site, where the producer's own notes and the other awards it has collected are listed. This year's other guide results are in our round-ups of the Tre Bicchieri 2027 and Bibenda, DoctorWine and Vinibuoni 2027.
