La Raia
La Raia is a biodynamic estate in the Gavi hills, bought by the Rossi Cairo family in 2002. Of its 200 hectares, 65 are vineyards on limestone and marl, set among fields, pastures and woodland. The farming follows biodynamic principles, with no synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides, and the estate is Demeter certified. The cellar has a rammed-earth pisé wall, built in the Novi Ligure tradition. Cortese is the heart of the range, from the fresh Gavi Pleo to the Riserva Vigna Madonnina and the long-aged Pisé cru, first made in 2005. Two Barberas, a small Pinot Nero and a Cortese passito complete the list. The estate also runs Locanda La Raia, with a Michelin green star, and the La Raia art foundation. Gavi is the white wine of the far south-east of Piemonte, made from Cortese alone.
