Gaja
Gaja is a Barbaresco estate founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja. Angelo Gaja took the helm in 1961 and his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni now work with him. The cellar is on Via Torino in the village of Barbaresco, a short drive from Alba, and the estate farms roughly 100 hectares across Barbaresco and Barolo.
Sorì San Lorenzo, first made in 1967 as a single-vineyard Barbaresco, was followed by Costa Russi and Sorì Tildìn. In 1988 Gaja added vineyards in Barolo, the source of Sperss and Conteisa. The range also includes Langhe wines such as Darmagi, Sito Moresco, Rossj-Bass, Gaia and Rey, and Alteni di Brassica. Gaja also owns estates in Tuscany and Sicily, which are not covered here.

Wines from Gaja
- Alteni di Brassica: Langhe DOC, Sauvignon Blanc, White. Alteni di Brassica is Gaja's Sauvignon Blanc, planted on a small parcel within the Barbaresco zone that takes its name from a low-lying vineyard once used for growing cabbage (brassica).
- Barbaresco: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Gaja's flagship Barbaresco blends fruit from 14 vineyards across the appellation into the estate's most classic expression of Nebbiolo.
- Conteisa: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Conteisa is Gaja's second Barolo bottling, from vineyards acquired alongside those that produce Sperss.
- Costa Russi: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo, Red. Costa Russi is one of Gaja's three historic single-vineyard bottlings from Barbaresco, released alongside Sorì Tildìn and Sorì San Lorenzo since the late 1970s.
- Darmagi: Langhe DOC, Cabernet Sauvignon, Red. Darmagi means "what a shame" in Piemontese dialect, Angelo Gaja's father's reaction on learning that prime Barbaresco land had been planted to Cabernet Sauvignon instead of Nebbiolo.
- Gaia & Rey: Langhe DOC, Chardonnay, White. Named for Angelo Gaja's daughter Gaia and his grandmother Clotilde ("Rey"), this was one of the first barrique-aged Chardonnays made in Piedmont, planted controversially on prime Barbaresco land in the early 1980s.
- Rossj-Bass: Langhe DOC, Chardonnay, White. Rossj-Bass, named for Angelo Gaja's daughter Rossana, is the estate's second, fresher expression of Chardonnay alongside the richer Gaia & Rey.
- Sito Moresco: Langhe DOC, Nebbiolo, Merlot, Barbera, Red. Sito Moresco blends Nebbiolo with Merlot and Barbera from limestone-rich vineyards in both the Barbaresco and Barolo zones, offering an earlier-drinking counterpart to Gaja's single-vineyard reds.
- Sorì San Lorenzo: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo, Red. Released for the first time in 1967, Sorì San Lorenzo was Italy's first single-vineyard Barbaresco and the wine that launched Gaja's modern era.
- Sorì Tildìn: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo, Red. Sorì Tildìn, named for Angelo Gaja's grandmother Clotilde, is one of the estate's three legendary single-vineyard Barbarescos.
- Sperss: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Sperss marked Angelo Gaja's expansion into Barolo in 1988; its name is Piemontese dialect for "nostalgia," a nod to the family's earlier Barolo bottlings before focusing exclusively on Barbaresco for decades.
