Giovanni Manzone

Giovanni Manzone

Manzone Giovanni is a fifth-generation family estate in Castelletto, a hamlet of Monforte d'Alba, where the family has farmed the same ground since 1925. Giovanni and Rita Manzone now work alongside their children Mauro, the estate's winemaker, and Mirella, who looks after the cellar and hospitality. The estate's 14 hectares include about 8.3 under vine, entirely within the Barolo denomination and split between the Castelletto and Gramolere MGAs, the latter also home to the historic Marchesa and Crutin plots. Every stage, from pruning to bottling, is done by hand: fermentations are spontaneous, macerations slow, and the wines age unfiltered and unfined in large casks before release. The family has farmed without tillage, herbicides or chemical fertilizers since 1978, and Giovanni Manzone is credited with rescuing Rossese Bianco, a nearly extinct indigenous white grape, from disappearance in the early 1980s. Monforte sits on the southern side of the Barolo hills, whose vineyard landscape joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014.
