Marchesi di Barolo

Marchesi di Barolo

Founded in 1807 when Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti married the French noblewoman Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, Marchesi di Barolo occupies the cellars where Barolo as we know it today was first created: Giulia Falletti insisted on full fermentation and long ageing in large oak casks, a radical departure from the sweeter, unstable Nebbiolo wines of the era, and one that turned Barolo into "the wine of kings." After the childless Falletti couple died, their estate passed to the charitable foundation Opera Pia Barolo, until Pietro Abbona and his siblings acquired the historic cellars in 1929. The Abbona family has run the estate for five generations since, now led by Ernesto and Anna Abbona alongside Valentina and Davide. Five of Giulia Falletti's original oak casks, restored, are still used in ageing wine today. The estate controls around 120 hectares across the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, including Cascina Bruciata, a historic property in Barbaresco.
