Roagna
The Roagna family has farmed vineyards around Barbaresco for generations, long before Barbaresco and Barolo took the form they have today; their oldest still-owned plot, Asili, was bought in 1961, Pajè in 1953. Luca Roagna took over winemaking in 2001 and runs the estate today with his partner Romina Barberis. Between the two appellations and a small holding in the Colli Tortonesi, the family farms about 20 hectares from two cellars, in Barbaresco and in Castiglione Falletto, bottling single-vineyard wines from crus including Pajè, Asili, Montefico, Gallina and Albesani in Barbaresco and Pira and Rocche di Castiglione in Barolo. The house style favours long submerged-cap macerations and years of ageing in large neutral oak and concrete rather than small new barrels, with permanent grass cover left growing between the rows.
Barbaresco and Barolo sit only a few kilometres apart across the Tanaro valley near Alba, and Castiglione Falletto, Roagna's second base, is the most central of Barolo's eleven villages.
