F.lli Giacosa

F.lli Giacosa

Giacosa Fratelli is a family winery in Neive, in the Langhe hills of Cuneo province. Giuseppe Giacosa bought the original cellar in Borgonuovo di Neive in 1895, and the estate is now run by the fifth generation, cousins Alessandro, Mauro, Lorenzo and Anna. The family farms about 50 hectares of vineyard built up over decades: Cascina Canavere and San Pietro in the Bussia area of Monforte d'Alba, the Mandorlo vineyard in Scarrone, Castiglione Falletto, Madonna Como near Alba, and Basarin and Cascina Bordini in Neive itself. The cellar turns out around 600,000 bottles a year, covering Barolo and Barbaresco from named crus, several Barbera and Dolcetto bottlings, Nebbiolo d'Alba, and whites from Arneis, Cortese and Chardonnay. Neive is one of the four townships of the Barbaresco DOCG, and its Nebbiolo vineyards climb the ridges above the Tanaro valley.

Wines from F.lli Giacosa

  • Barbaresco: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. The estate's entry-level Barbaresco, made from Nebbiolo grown across their vineyards; the producer notes that even plots within the same subarea give differing characteristics.
  • Barbera d'Alba: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. The estate's entry-level Barbera d'Alba, described by the producer as improving further with several years in bottle.
  • Barolo: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. The estate's entry-level Barolo, made entirely from Nebbiolo grown in the family's Langhe hillside vineyards.
  • Basarin: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barbaresco from the Basarin hill in Neive, where the family's Nebbiolo vines benefit from a particular exposure that the producer says gives the wine its maturity and structure.
  • Basarin "Vigna Gianmatè": Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barbaresco from the Gianmate plot on the Basarin hill, whose clay-rich sandstone soil and south/southeast exposure the producer says give it a distinct aromatic complexity from the rest of the hill.
  • Bussia: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. Barbera d'Alba from the Cascina Canavere estate in the Bussia subzone of Monforte d'Alba.
  • Bussia: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barolo from the family's Cascina Canavere vineyard in the Bussia subzone of Monforte d'Alba, one of the estate's most acclaimed crus.
  • Ca' Lunga: Langhe DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. The estate's top Chardonnay selection, aged partly in cask; the producer's own vineyard page names it, alongside Rorea, as one of two distinct wines made from the Cascina Rorea grapes.
  • Dolcetto d'Alba: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto, Red. The estate's straightforward Dolcetto d'Alba, ready to drink young with only gentle ageing.
  • Gavi: Gavi DOCG, Cortese, White. Gavi made from Cortese grown in the Alessandria area, described by the producer as a fresh, light wine for immediate drinking.
  • Grignolino d'Asti: Grignolino d'Asti DOC, Grignolino, Red. A light, aromatic red from the Grignolino grape, which the producer notes takes its name from the Piedmontese dialect word for the grape's numerous seeds.
  • Madonna Como: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto, Red. Dolcetto d'Alba from the family's Madonna Como vineyard in Alba.
  • Madonna Como: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. Barbera d'Alba from the Madonna Como vineyard, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a style the producer describes as inspired by tradition.
  • Maria Gioana: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. A selection of the estate's best Barbera lots from three vineyards, named after a local Piedmontese song about a lady called Maria Gioana who is cured of her troubles by wine.
  • Nebbiolo d'Alba: Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC, Nebbiolo, Red. An easier-drinking Nebbiolo from vineyards on the Tanaro's left bank, released after a year's bottle ageing.
  • Roero Arneis: Roero Arneis DOCG, Arneis, White. A white from an old vineyard on the Tanaro's left bank in the Roero, the producer describes it as fragrant and best enjoyed young.
  • Rorea: Langhe DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. Chardonnay from the Cascina Rorea vineyard in Trezzo Tinella, one of two distinct wines the estate makes from these grapes alongside Ca' Lunga.
  • Sarrocco: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto, Red. Dolcetto d'Alba from the family's San Rocco vineyard.
  • Scarrone "Vigna Mandorlo": Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barolo from the Vigna Mandorlo plot in the Scarrone subzone of Castiglione Falletto; the label reproduces the vine rows at the foot of Castiglione Falletto castle and a stylised almond.
  • Scarrone "Vigna Mandorlo" Riserva: Barolo DOCG Riserva, Nebbiolo (Lampia and Michet biotypes), Red. The estate's Barolo Riserva from the Mandorlo plot in Scarrone, aged nearly four years in French oak before release; selected grapes, hand-harvested.
