Cantina Sociale di Nizza
Cantina di Nizza began in October 1955 as a cooperative of local growers in Nizza Monferrato and had 200 members within a couple of years. It modernised its plant and winemaking from the 1970s and now bottles two dozen wines, with Barbera at the centre: Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Asti Superiore and the Nizza DOCG cuvées Ceppi Vecchi, Riserva and the organic 310. Dolcetto, Grignolino, Ruchè and a Timorasso from Colli Tortonesi sit alongside whites, a rosé, Charmat and Alta Langa sparklings, Moscato, Brachetto, a Barbera chinato and a Moscato vermouth made with local cardoon seeds. In Origine comes from organic grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts. The home ground is the hill country around Nizza Monferrato in the province of Asti, where the Nizza denomination covers eighteen communes on Pliocene sands and marls.
