Piazzo Comm. Armando
Piazzo is a family winery in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, a hamlet of Alba in the Langhe, founded in the 1960s by Armando Piazzo and his wife Gemma Veglia. Their son Franco and his wife Marina took over running the estate in the early 2000s, and today Franco and Marina's sons Simone and Marco help manage sales and cellar work, making it a three-generation family operation.
The estate farms single-vineyard crus in Barbaresco, including Rizzi-Fratin, Pajore and Nervo, home to the Vigna Giaia plot, and in Barolo, across Sottocastello di Novello, Cerviano-Merli and Corini-Pallaretta, alongside Roero Arneis, Barbera, Dolcetto, Langhe Nebbiolo and Chardonnay, Moscato d'Asti and two traditional method sparkling wines. Barolo and Barbaresco age in large oak barrels rather than small barriques, and a single vineyard Barbaresco Riserva is only made in the best years. San Rocco Seno d'Elvio sits in the Langhe hills a short drive from Alba, in the heart of Piemonte's Nebbiolo country.

A vintage Traditional Method Alta Langa Brut named for the Piazzo family's origins in San Bovo di Castino, in the Alta Langa, where Armando's great-grandfather Paolo Piazzo lived and worked as a woodcutter.
- Aiman: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A Langhe Nebbiolo blended from vineyards around San Rocco Seno d'Elvio and Guarene, including the Cortine vineyard, made for early, easy drinking rather than long ageing.
- Argè: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A Barbaresco dedicated to founders Armando and Gemma Piazzo, made from Nebbiolo grown across the Rocche Massalupo, Rizzi and Nervo crus on the hills of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, in the municipalities of Alba and Treiso.
- Buran: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. A straightforward, everyday Dolcetto named after Cascina Buran, a farmhouse near the winery bought by Armando Piazzo in 1995.
- Cicheta: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato Bianco 100% (Moscato di Canelli), Sweet. A Moscato d'Asti blended from vineyards around San Rocco Seno d'Elvio and in the villages of Mango and Neviglie, styled for drinking at any time of day rather than only as a dessert wine.
- Cortine: Roero Arneis DOCG, Arneis 100%, White. A single-vineyard Roero Arneis from the Cortine cru in Guarene, planted on marly soil with sandy infiltrations that give the wine its mineral, zesty character.
- Fil Rus: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A Barbera d'Alba from vineyards on both banks of the Tanaro, blending grapes from the Langhe hills of Alba with those of the Roero hills in Guarene.
- MAsSIM: Spumante Metodo Classico, Nebbiolo 85-90%, Chardonnay 10-15%, Sparkling. A Traditional Method sparkling wine made mostly from Nebbiolo with a small share of Chardonnay from cooler vintages. Its name, MasSim, combines Marco and Simone, the sons of Marina and Franco Piazzo.
- Pajorè: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. First produced in 2019, 40 years after the winery's first Barbaresco, this single-vineyard wine comes from the Pajorè farmhouse plot in Treiso, named after the Peirolero family who once farmed it.
- Riserva Nervo Vigna Giaia: Barbaresco DOCG Riserva, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. The estate's most traditional Barbaresco, a Riserva made only from the oldest vines of the Vigna Giaia plot within the Nervo cru, named for the yellow colour its leaves take on early each autumn.
- Riserva Sottocastello di Novello: Barolo DOCG Riserva, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Made only in vintages that promise something special, from the oldest vines of the Sottocastello cru in Novello, this Riserva needs at least six years to reveal its full depth and character.
- Rizzi Vigna Fratin: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Barbaresco from the Fratín plot in the Rizzi cru, directly opposite the winery, and the first vineyard the Piazzo family purchased, in the 1970s.
- Scaletta: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Dolcetto from the steeply sloped Scaletta vineyard in Alba, harvested and vinified separately to give more structure and body than a typical Dolcetto d'Alba.
- Sottocastello di Novello: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-vineyard Barolo from the Sottocastello cru in Novello, on the side of the appellation that looks towards the Alta Langa, echoing the finesse of La Morra with a distinct hillside character.
- Strangè: Langhe DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay 100%, White. A barrel-fermented Langhe Chardonnay from the Madonna di Como vineyard in Alba, built with the structure and ageing potential of a red wine.
- Superiore Mugiot: Barbera d'Alba DOC Superiore, Barbera 100%, Red. One of Piazzo's first single-vineyard wines, made since the late 1970s from the Mugiot plot, named after the nickname given to Armando Piazzo's grandfather and later to Armando himself.
- Valente: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Piazzo's traditional Barolo, blended from grapes grown in the Sottocastello di Novello, Cerviano-Merli and Corini-Pallaretta vineyards in Novello. Named after Valente, the previous owner of the vineyards Armando…
