La Scolca
La Scolca is a Soldati family estate in Rovereto, a hamlet of Gavi, making wine since 1919 and now in its fourth generation. The family registered Gavi dei Gavi as a trademark in 1969, and the Black Label that carries the name remains the estate's flagship. Cortese is the backbone of the range. Vines run from 5 to over 60 years old, grapes are picked by hand and reach the cellar within half an hour, and the wines ferment cold in steel and rest on their native lees. The list stretches from the easy Il Valentino to the D'Antan wines, both still and sparkling, which sleep for years before release, plus Metodo Classico bottlings, a Pinot Nero, a Sauvignon called Sol Lui, a rosato and a low-alcohol Cortegaia. Gavi sits in the province of Alessandria, in the south-east of Piemonte, and its DOCG whites are made from Cortese.
