Filippo Gallino

Filippo Gallino

Filippo Gallino is a family estate in Canale, in the heart of the Roero, worked by the Gallinos for more than a hundred years, from Stefano, born in 1886, through Felice, known as Licin, to Filippo, born in 1939, who in 1972 was among the first in the area to bottle Roero Arneis on its own. Today Gianni Gallino makes the wines and the family farms about 15 hectares around Canale and the left bank of the Tanaro without chemical weed control, sowing grasses and flowers between the rows. Alongside Roero Arneis, the estate produces Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo-based Roero and Langhe wines, a metodo classico sparkling, a rosato and an orange wine. Canale sits on the sandy, clay soils of ancient marine origin that mark the Roero, on the north bank of the Tanaro opposite the Langhe, part of the vineyard landscape inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

  • Le Due Rose: Vino Rosato, Rosé. A rosato from red grapes on the left bank of the Tanaro, picked slightly early to preserve freshness and acidity. First bottled in the late 1980s and dedicated to Gianni Gallino's sisters, Enrica and Laura.
  • Licin: Roero DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. A Roero DOCG Nebbiolo with softer, more velvety tannins than the Langhe style, ready to drink sooner. First bottled in 1994 and dedicated to Filippo Gallino's father, Felice, known as "Licin".
  • Moda Giuvu: Vino Bianco, White. An orange wine at 14% ABV, macerated on its skins and fermented with indigenous yeasts. It is the modern, innovative counterpart to the estate's traditional Moda Veja.
  • Moda Veja: Vino Bianco, White. A traditional skin-contact white made without selected yeasts or filtration, in about 2,000 bottles a year. First bottled in 2012 in tribute to Filippo Gallino's first Arneis Secco of 1972.
