Cieck

Cieck

Cieck is a family estate in San Giorgio Canavese, between Turin and Ivrea, founded in 1985 by Remo Falconieri, who trained in France in traditional method winemaking before bottling the estate's first Erbaluce Metodo Classico that year. Agronomist Domenico Caretto now tends the estate's 13 hectares of vineyards and cellar, while Lia Falconieri, Remo's daughter, runs administration and communication. Almost all the vines are Erbaluce, the native white grape of the Canavese, alongside old plantings of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Neretto di San Giorgio and Freisa, trained on the traditional Canavese pergola. Several plots carry their own names and histories, among them Vigna Misobolo, farmed since the 1970s and now bottled as a single vineyard Erbaluce. The estate makes still, traditional method sparkling and passito wines from Erbaluce, all within one appellation. Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG sits in the glacial Moraine Amphitheatre of Ivrea, roughly 40 km north of Turin, whose sand and stone soils give the wines their mineral edge.

Wines from Cieck

  • Alladium: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG Passito, Erbaluce, Sweet. Alladium is Cieck's traditional Erbaluce passito, dried the old Canavese way on hanging racks over winter and aged at least five years in oak; the estate has made it since 1985 and named it after Aglié's Latin name.
  • Alladium Riserva: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG Passito, Erbaluce, Sweet. Alladium Riserva is Cieck's reserve passito, made only in the best years from hand-selected bunches and aged at least ten years in barrel before release in just a few bottles, intended for life's more important moments.
  • Calliope: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG Spumante, Erbaluce, Sparkling. Calliope is Cieck's reserve sparkling wine, created in the mid-1990s after Remo Falconieri saw Champagne houses use wood to lend elegance to their top cuvees; part of the Erbaluce ferments and rests in small oak…
  • Erbaluce: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, Erbaluce, White. Erbaluce is Cieck's purest, most classic Erbaluce di Caluso, blended from grapes across several estate vineyards and, the producer notes, the version preferred by Marilena, Remo Falconieri's wife.
  • Ingenuus: White. Ingenuus is an unconventional, low-intervention white born from a friendly disagreement between Remo Falconieri and a promoter of natural wines; it ferments spontaneously without selected yeasts or temperature control,…
  • Nature: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG Spumante, Erbaluce, Sparkling. Nature is Lia Falconieri's own sparkling wine, an uncompromisingly dry (Pas Dose) traditional-method Erbaluce di Caluso first presented at the end of 2017 with the 2013 vintage, resting at least 48 months on lees.
  • Rosé Brut: Vino Spumante di Qualità, Sparkling. Rosé Brut is a traditional-method sparkling rosé made from the estate's oldest Falconieri-family vineyards of traditional red varieties trained on pergola, first made by Remo Falconieri in the 1990s.
  • San Giorgio: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG Spumante, Erbaluce, Sparkling. San Giorgio was Cieck's first sparkling wine, launched in 1985 after founder Remo Falconieri trained in traditional-method winemaking in Epernay, Champagne, and applied it to the estate's native Erbaluce grape.
  • Sust: Canavese DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo (Lampia and Picutener clones), Red. Sust is Cieck's Nebbiolo, grown with an espalier Guyot system and Remo Falconieri's own 'double row' method; the Piedmontese name means desire, or care, for an understated, unshowy red.
  • T: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, Erbaluce, White. T is a late-harvest style of Erbaluce di Caluso developed with the University of Turin's Department of Agriculture; the grapes stay on the vine until two weeks after the end of harvest, then age 8 months in wood and 12…
  • TreCarli: Canavese DOC Rosso, Neretto di San Giorgio, Red. TreCarli is Cieck's tribute to Neretto di San Giorgio, once the Canavese's most common grape and now made in very limited quantities as part of a project to rediscover native varieties of the Province of Turin.
  • Tucc-un: Canavese DOC Rosso, Barbera, Freisa, Neretto di San Giorgio, Red. Tucc-un blends the traditional Canavese red varieties Barbera, Freisa and Neretto di San Giorgio, reviving a historic Canavese field-blend tradition; its name, 'all for one', is also the motto of the Ivrea Alpine…
  • Vigna Misobolo: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, Erbaluce, White. Vigna Misobolo is Cieck's single-vineyard Erbaluce, from a historic plot on the hill of San Giorgio over 50 years old, first planted with white grapes alone by founder Remo Falconieri in the 1970s while he was the…
