Pierfrancesco Gatto

Pierfrancesco Gatto

Gatto Pierfrancesco is a family estate in Castagnole Monferrato, in the province of Asti, founded in the early 1900s. Three generations have worked the vineyards and cellar since, and Pierfrancesco Gatto has run the estate since he officially took over in 1993, focusing on quality and on the historic grapes of the area, chiefly Barbera and Grignolino. The family's vineyards lie across Castagnole Monferrato, Montemagno Monferrato and Viarigi.

The range runs from Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato, the estate's best-known wine, through Barbera d'Asti and Barbera del Monferrato, Grignolino d'Asti, a Monferrato Nebbiolo and a Monferrato Rosso blend, to a Pinot Nero and a Viognier, its only white. Ruchè itself is said locally to have arrived with Cistercian monks from Burgundy, and Castagnole Monferrato, in the Monferrato hills of Asti province, has been a wine-growing centre since the Middle Ages.
