Pelissero

Pelissero

Pelissero is a family estate in Treiso, in the Barbaresco zone south of Alba, now in its third generation. The first bottles under the Pelissero label date from 1960. The family farms 42 hectares, all its own land, around Treiso, Neive, Barbaresco, Neviglie and Alba, and fills about 250,000 bottles a year for some 60 countries. Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto make up 85 percent of production. The range starts with three Barbaresco bottlings, Vanotu, Tulin and Nubiola, and continues with single-vineyard Barbera and Dolcetto, Langhe Nebbiolo, the red blend Long Now, a Riesling, a white blend, Moscato d'Asti and a partly fermented must. The cellar stands among its vineyards in the Augenta zone, with a view over the Langhe hills. Treiso is one of the communes that make up the Barbaresco DOCG.

Wines from Pelissero

  • Augenta: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. Dolcetto from the vineyard around the cellar, a long-standing flagship made with low yields and an unusual oak-cask ageing for the variety.
  • Barlet: Vino Rosso, Red. An everyday table wine from native varieties, made from the less important grapes of the whole estate; barlet is a Langhe word for a small tapped keg.
  • Langhe Bianco: Langhe DOC Bianco, Favorita, Riesling, Chardonnay, White. First made in 2022, when drought yields led the estate to blend its three white varieties in one bottle.
  • Langhe Nebbiolo: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Made from grapes judged unsuitable for Barbaresco that year, mostly from younger vines.
  • Long Now: Langhe DOC Rosso, Red. A blend of two varieties from a steep vineyard bought in 1999, named after the Long Now Foundation's clock, which is pictured on the label.
  • Moscato d'Asti: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato 100%, Sweet. Moscato d'Asti first made in 2010 after the estate bought Moscato plots in late 2008.
  • Mosto Parzialmente Fermentato: Mosto Parzialmente Fermentato, Sweet. A lighter, sweet, partly fermented must at 5.5% alcohol, first made in 2009, released a year before the Moscato d'Asti.
  • Munfrina: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. Dolcetto first made in 1984; the name Munfrina recalls the vineyard's former owner, a woman from Monferrato.
  • Nubiola: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. The estate's entry-level Barbaresco, blended from six small plots and first made in 2001; the name Nubiola is an old word for Nebbiolo.
  • Piani: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. Barbera from the gentler Piani slope, produced since 1960, when it was called Ronchi; the name changed to Piani in 1990.
  • Rigadin: Langhe DOC Riesling, Riesling 100%, White. A late-ripening Riesling from a north-facing, windy 400 m vineyard, first made in 2015.
  • Tulin: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Barbaresco named after the vineyard it comes from, first made as a named wine in 2001; in Piedmontese, a tulin is a small tin vessel.
  • Tulin: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A rich Barbera from 2004 plantings of low-yield clones on a low-vigour rootstock, first made in 2009.
  • Vanotu: Barbaresco DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Barbaresco from the 1964 Vanotu vineyard, named in dialect after Giorgio Pelissero's grandfather Giovanni, the vineyard's former owner.
  • Vanotu Riserva: Barbaresco Riserva DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A limited Riserva from the 2010 vintage, released in May 2020 for the estate's 60th anniversary, from the 1964 Vanotu vines.
