La Serra

By Poderi Marcarini, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy

Poderi Marcarini La Serra

La Serra is the other side of Marcarini's Barolo production, from a historic area whose soils, though low in organic matter, are rich in minerals; ripening comes a little later than in Brunate, giving elegant, less structured but generous wines.

Tasting notes

Garnet colour with ruby-red reflections and a slight orange edge. The nose is ethereal, fresh, elegant and very persistent, with hints of violet, rose, liquorice and sweet spices; the flavour is long and intense.

Vineyard planting
4,000 vines/ha, free-standing espalier with Guyot pruning, rootstocks Kober 5BB and 420A, planted 1992-2002, 4 hectares under vine. Estate-wide, Marcarini's vineyards are pruned to limit yield, maintained with organic composting and controlled grassing over of the rows, and vine diseases are treated with traditional methods.
Vinification
Fermentation is strictly controlled with submerged-cap maceration lasting at least four weeks; after malolactic fermentation the wine is aged for two years in medium-capacity (20-40 hl) Slavonian oak barrels and is bottled unclarified and unfiltered. Grapes have been selected during harvest since 2015.
