Abbona Pressenda

Pressenda is a striking vineyard facing the castle of Serralunga, in the township of Monforte d'Alba; a Barolo built for long ageing, kept approachable by a natural acidity that refreshes the palate.

Tasting notes

Notably structured yet drinkable, with aromas of mint, violet, raspberry and spice; solid and persistent on the palate.

Pairs well with

Serious, important dishes.

Soil
Soil at the border of the Diano Sandstone and Lequio Formation: sandy with good limestone content (sand 50%, silt 30%, clay 20%, pH 8.0).
Exposure
East facing, 260-370m altitude (average 315m), 22% average slope.
Vineyard planting
Vines average 42 years old (the estate's vineyard page gives 40 years for the wider Pressenda-Castelletto plot), Guyot trained at 5,000 vines per hectare; yield 70 quintals per hectare over 3.95 hectares.
Vinification
Crushed and destemmed, followed by skin maceration. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in contact with the skins in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with daily pump-overs. At the end of this period the cap is submerged for a final maceration, then dry racking, settling and transfer to barrels. Malolactic fermentation carried out entirely and spontaneously during the submerged-cap maceration. Aged in barrel for a long period, then blended and bottled, resting in bottle at a constant 14°C for several months before release.
Serving temperature
18°C, after bringing the bottle to room temperature 24 hours before drinking.
Storage
Built for long ageing in the bottle.
