Braida

Braida

Braida was founded by Giacomo Bologna and is run today by siblings Raffaella and Giuseppe Bologna. The cellar stands at Ciappellette in Rocchetta Tanaro, in the Asti hills, and Barbera is the centre of the range. Bricco dell'Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, Ai Suma, Montebruna, Curej and La Monella are each bottled on their own, alongside Il Bacialé, a Monferrato Rosso. The vineyards lie between Monferrato and Langhe, with sites at Montebruna, Asinara and Mango.\n\nThe rest of the list covers Grignolino as Limonte, Timorasso, and the Serra dei Fiori whites: La Regina from Nascetta, Re di Fiori from Riesling, Il Fiore and Asso di Fiori. Brachetto d'Acqui and Moscato d'Asti are the sweet wines. Braida also runs a B&B Wine Resort.

Wines from Braida

  • Ai Suma: Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. On the 16th of October 1989, going against the advice given to him by everyone, Giacomo Bologna carried out a late harvest of Barbera. “Ai Suma!”, “we did it!” he exclaimed when he tasted the wine: a new Braida Barbera…
  • Asso di Fiori: Langhe Chardonnay DOC, Chardonnay, White. Asso di Fiori is a delightful white wine from Braida , offering freshness and floral notes. Asso is the highest symbol in the production of the Braida estate, made with 100% late-harvested Chardonnay. We use only the…
  • Brachetto d’Acqui: Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG, Brachetto, Sweet. Braida's founding wine: Giacomo Bologna inherited the "Braida" nickname from a Piedmontese handball champion, and the family began making this sweet, aromatic Brachetto d'Acqui in 1967.
  • Bricco dell'Uccellone: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. Bricco dell'Uccellone is the wine that redefined Barbera in the 1980s. Named after a hillside woman whose beak-like nose earned her the nickname "the big bird," it was the first Barbera aged in barrique, launching the…
  • Bricco della Bigotta: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. Bricco della Bigotta is a powerful and elegant Barbera, showcasing the intensity and finesse achievable from this esteemed cru.
  • Curej: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. Curej takes its name from the family nickname of those who first tended this Rocchetta Tanaro soil. It is Braida's youngest Barbera d'Asti, sourced exclusively from the hills of San Bernardo.
  • Il Bacialé: Monferrato Rosso DOC, Barbera, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Red. Il Bacialé means "the matchmaker" in Piemontese dialect. The wine represents an arranged marriage between Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, built to age beautifully.
  • Il Fiore: Langhe Bianco DOC, 70% Chardonnay, 30% Nascetta, White. Il Fiore pairs an international grape, Chardonnay, with the highly original native Nascetta, grown at Tenuta Serra dei Fiori.
  • La Monella: Barbera del Monferrato Frizzante DOC, Barbera, Red. The wine that launched Braida's story: the first grapes came from grandma Caterina's vineyard, and granddad chalked "La Monella" onto the liveliest barrel of Barbera. Unchanged since 1961.
  • La Regina: Langhe DOC Nascetta, Nascetta, White. La Regina is made from Nascetta, an old grape native to the Langhe rediscovered only recently and produced in just a few thousand bottles.
  • Limonte: Grignolino d'Asti DOC, Grignolino, Red. Limonte takes its name from the clay-and-silt soil (limo) of the Rocchetta Tanaro hillside where this Grignolino is grown, a grape variety Braida believes in more every vintage.
  • Limonte GB: Grignolino d'Asti DOC, Grignolino, Red. Limonte GB is Giuseppe Bologna's late-harvest expression of Grignolino, signed with his initials to showcase the grape's robust, decisive character.
  • Montebruna: Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. It took us 35 legal documents and seven years to bring together the numerous parcels of land that make up Montebruna, a property with outstanding oenological value. When we succeeded, we were so ecstatic that we gave…
  • Re di Fiori: Langhe DOC Riesling, Riesling Renano, White. Re di Fiori proves that Riesling, a grape from the cold Rhine and Moselle valleys, can perform beautifully in the once sea-covered soils of the Langhe.
  • Timorasso: Colli Tortonesi DOC Timorasso, Timorasso, White. Timorasso opens a new chapter for Braida: its first still white wine, born from the encounter between the Colli Tortonesi and Rocchetta Tanaro.
  • Vigna Senza Nome: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato d'Asti, Sweet. The Latin motto on the label, "Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas," marks the 1990 purchase of this Mango hillside, passed down through three generations: Giuseppe, Giacomo and Giuseppe again.
