Gattera

By Mauro Veglio, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy

Mauro Veglio Gattera

A single-cru Barolo from the Gattera MGA, the first vineyard the family bought in the 1960s, combining Mauro's warmer, south-west-facing plot with the cooler, south-east-facing plot added from nephew Alessandro Veglio's estate in 2017.

Tasting notes

Light ruby red with subtle garnet reflections. Ethereal aromas, uniquely sweet and spicy, blending with fruity and flowery notes. Warm and slightly balsamic on the palate, with delicately tannic notes offset by a good balance of alcohol; well-structured and generous, with sweet, mouthwatering tannins. Ready for drinking immediately, with the potential to age and improve for over 20 years.

Production area
About two and a half hectares in the Gattera MGA, on the border between La Morra and Castiglione Falletto; the first vineyard Angelo Veglio bought in the 1960s, later joined by neighbouring parcels from Alessandro Veglio's estate after the 2017 merger.
Soil
Tortonian soils of La Morra (clay, sand and limestone) meeting the Helvetian soils of Castiglione (compact brown marls).
Exposure
South-easterly to south-westerly, at about 250 m altitude.
Vineyard planting
Planted in the early 1950s.
Vinification
Maceration on the skins in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 20-25 days, beginning with cold maceration (10°C) for the first 48 hours and gentle extraction with a couple of daily pump-overs. After racking, malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel. Towards December the wine moves to small oak barrels, 30% new and 70% used, for 24 months. After decanting in stainless steel, it is bottled without fining or filtration.
Serving temperature
16-18°C, allowing it to warm and open in the glass.
