Mauro Veglio

Mauro Veglio

Mauro Veglio is a three-generation family estate in La Morra, at the heart of the Barolo zone. It began in the mid-20th century when sharecropper Angelo Veglio bought his first vineyard in Gattera; his son Mauro later took over young, shifting the farm from bulk demijohn wine to serious Barolo, and added crus in Arborina and Rocche dell'Annunziata before bringing Monforte d'Alba vineyards into the estate after his 1987 marriage to Daniela. In 2017 the winery merged with the neighboring estate of Mauro's nephew, Alessandro Veglio, joining a new generation to the cellar. The family now farms about 19 hectares across La Morra, Monforte, Barolo and Serralunga d'Alba, organically for more than 20 years, and bottles a run of single-cru Barolo alongside Dolcetto, Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo. La Morra sits on the western side of the Barolo appellation, known for sandier, looser soils that tend to give Barolo its earliest perfume and softest tannins.

  • Arborina: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-cru Barolo from the Arborina MGA in the hamlet of Annunziata, the first Barolo the family produced and, in their words, the most representative of the estate's style.

  • Barolo: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. This Barolo blends grapes from four crus across three municipalities of the Barolo zone, aiming for a classic, balanced style.
  • Cascina Nuova: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A riper, more concentrated Barbera from old vines and low yields on the Cascina Nuova hill, the estate's home site, aged longer in wood; the estate describes it as 'a Barbera with the substance of a Barolo.'
  • Castelletto: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-cru Barolo from Castelletto, between Monforte d'Alba and Perno, on vineyards Daniela Veglio brought to the estate when she married Mauro; the estate was the first to put the name on the label, ahead of its…
  • Comune di Serralunga d'Alba: Barolo DOCG del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A Barolo sourced between the Manocino and Lirano MGAs in the comune of Serralunga d'Alba, aged in large barrels for a style the estate says is distinct from its La Morra wines.
  • Dolcetto d'Alba: Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, Dolcetto 100%, Red. Made from Dolcetto grown on the cooler north slope of Cascina Nuova and at Castelletto di Monforte, for a velvety, light wine meant to be drunk young and fresh.
  • Gattera: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-cru Barolo from the Gattera MGA, the first vineyard the family bought in the 1960s, combining Mauro's warmer, south-west-facing plot with the cooler, south-east-facing plot added from nephew Alessandro…
  • Paiagallo: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A single-cru Barolo from the Paiagallo MGA in the municipality of Barolo, expanded by 0.65 hectares through the 2017 merger with Alessandro Veglio's neighbouring vineyard.
  • Rocche dell'Annunziata: Barolo Riserva DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. The estate's Barolo Riserva, from a small plot in the Rocche dell'Annunziata cru between La Morra and the hamlet of Annunziata, known for its crushed-stone soils.
