Cantina San Matteo
Azienda Agricola San Matteo is Massimo Diotti's winery at Rovereto, in the hills of Gavi in the province of Alessandria. His family roots lie further west: a great-grandfather, Giuseppe, grew grapes and made wine at Vesime in the Alta Langa toward the end of the nineteenth century. Diotti released his first bottles in 2005, the year his son was born, and named the estate after him. Today the estate farms 33 hectares, all inside DOCG zones, around San Cristoforo, Francavilla Bisio, Capriata d'Orba and Gavi. The cellar is at La Palazzina, bought in 2016, and the Cascina Roma farmhouse followed in 2018. The range runs from a plain Gavi and the single-vineyard Le Parodine to Roero Arneis, Moscato d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco from Langhe and Roero sites, plus a Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi. Gavi lies close to the Ligurian border, and Cortese is the grape its DOCG is built on.
