Silvio Grasso
Silvio Grasso is a family-run estate in La Morra, on the western side of the Barolo appellation, founded in 1927. Alessio Federico Grasso, who took over the cellar from his father Silvio, began estate-bottling the whole harvest in the mid-1980s and still runs the property today. The vineyards sit around the Annunziata hamlet and reach into several named crus, including Giachini, Bricco Luciani, Bricco Manzoni and Turnè, with further plots of Nebbiolo in Monforte d'Alba, Dolcetto in Diano d'Alba, and Barbera d'Alba both from the home vineyard and the Fontanile plot. Barolo is the estate's main focus: most of the single-vineyard bottlings rest in French oak barriques for two years, while the Turnè cru is aged instead in large Slavonian oak casks. La Morra occupies the Barolo zone's western, sandier soils, an area whose Nebbiolo has long been prized for softer tannins and earlier drinkability than the wines of the appellation's eastern communes.
