Paolo Berta
The Berta family has worked vines at Nizza Monferrato for seven generations, and archive papers place them in the wine trade as early as 1842, mostly with Barbera. The estate lies on Strada San Michele, on the border of the Monferrato and the Langhe, and its vineyards face the hill of San Michele like a sunlit amphitheatre. The soils are marl, sands and sandstone at 250 to 270 metres, and named plots such as Canfulet, Bricco, Cerruta, Glauda, Valbeccara, Zisula and Giardino feed the individual wines. Barbera leads, with Nizza and Nizza Riserva at the top, alongside Dolcetto, Brachetto, Cortese, Nebbiolo and Moscato, including a passito. The family follows a low-impact agri-environment scheme in the vines and ages in steel and in barrels of several woods, some of them centuries old. Nizza Monferrato gives its name to the Nizza DOCG, the Barbera appellation of the area.
