Luigi Pira
Luigi Pira is a fifth-generation family estate in Serralunga d'Alba, one of Barolo's most respected communes. The Pira family has worked these hills since the late 1800s, but it was Luigi Pira and his wife Rosa who turned the holding into a proper wine business in the 1950s; his sons Gianpaolo, Romolo and Claudio began estate-bottling in the early 1990s, and the winery today is a family affair, with Gianpaolo's wife Tiziana and daughters Annalisa and Elena hands-on in vineyard and cellar. Production stays narrow: Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore, Langhe Nebbiolo and four Barolos, three single-vineyard crus (Marenca, Margheria, Vignarionda) plus a blended Barolo of the Serralunga commune. Ageing leans on large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional choice meant to let fruit and site show through rather than wood. Serralunga sits on the highest, easternmost ridge of the Barolo zone, where the compact Lequio Formation soils are associated with some of the denomination's most structured, long-lived wines.
