Coppo

Coppo

Coppo has made wine in Canelli since 1892 and still works from the same historic cellars. These are the Underground Cathedrals, brick-vaulted galleries dug into the tuff beneath the town and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. The family farms about 85 hectares, mostly in the Asti hills and in the Langhe, with Nizza vineyards for Barbera and plots in Novello, Monforte and La Morra for Barolo. A separate estate near Serravalle Scrivia supplies Cortese for Gavi.

The range centres on Barbera, led by the Nizza Pomorosso and the Riserva RdF, and on Alta Langa and other Metodo Classico sparkling wines, alongside Chardonnay, Moscato d'Asti, Freisa, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo. Canelli is the historic home of Piemonte sparkling wine.

Wines from Coppo

  • Barolo del Comune di La Morra: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Coppo has been producing Barolo since the fifties of the twentieth century. Because of this tradition, Coppo is among the few wineries allowed to vinify Nebbiolo grape to become Barolo outside of the wine's strict…
  • Bric del Marchese: Nizza DOCG, Barbera, Red. Nizza Bric del Marchese is the result of decades of experience working with barbera variety. The production area is in Nizza Monferrato, the geographical fulcrum of the appellation. Produced in very limited bottles.
  • Camp du Rouss: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. Literally "campo del rosso", or "the redhead's field" – this wine takes its name from the vineyard's very first owner: a red-headed man who was so burly he frightened the children.
  • Clelia Coppo: Metodo Classico Brut Rosé, 95% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Nero, Sparkling. This limited production Rosé Metodo Classico is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vinified as red wine. The remarkable finesse and delicacy comes from secondary fermentation in the bottle following the ancestral…
  • Costebianche: Piemonte DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. Costebianche is the youngest Chardonnay produced by Coppo. The wine gets its name from its vineyards, planted in naturally white soils of clayey-calcareous marl. Costebianche means "white slopes".
  • L'Avvocata: Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera, Red. This wine is named after the vineyard owner, a lawyer. Strict, stern, and commanding, she has always been known as simply "the lawyer". The young, vivacious wine is almost comically at odds with its serious namesake.
  • Luigi Coppo: Alta Langa DOCG, Pinot Nero, Chardonnay, Sparkling. Dedicated to Luigi, who took over the winery after his father Piero Coppo. His tenacity and determination pulled the winery through difficult times and led to modern restructuring and innovative technologies.
  • Luigi Coppo Pas Dosé: Alta Langa DOCG, 100% Pinot Nero, Sparkling. Dedicated to Luigi, who took over the winery after his father Piero Coppo. His tenacity and determination pulled the winery through difficult times. This sparkling wine, in its pas dosé version, is for everyone who…
  • Moncalvina: Moscato d'Asti DOCG, Moscato Bianco, Sweet. Moncalvina comes from the prestigious Canelli subzone, one of only 22 townships (of 52 permitted for Moscato d'Asti) allowed to carry that name, where Moscato has been grown since the 13th century.
  • Mondaccione: Langhe DOC Freisa, Freisa, Red. Mondaccione is Coppo's Freisa, a native Piemontese variety with a distinctive perfumed, slightly rustic character.
  • Monteriolo: Piemonte DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. Chardonnay has been present in Piedmont since the first half of the 1800s, thanks to Filippo Asinari, Count of San Marzano. Monteriolo showcases this heritage with the soil and microclimate ideally suited to the variety.
  • Nebbiolo: Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo, Red. Coppo's Langhe Nebbiolo is an accessible, earlier-drinking expression of the grape, made alongside the estate's Barolo from La Morra.
  • Pomorosso: Nizza DOCG, Barbera, Red. This wine owes its name to a red apple tree that grows on top of the hill where the vineyards were cultivated. This is the most prestigious Barbera from Coppo, and contributed substantially to the rebirth of this…
  • Pontiselli: Nizza DOCG, Barbera, Red. Nizza Pontiselli comes from the homonym area on the western border of the appellation area in Agliano Terme, one of the most traditional and suitable areas for barbera production. Produced in very limited bottles.
  • RdF: Piemonte DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. RdF, the highest interpretation of the Chardonnay variety by Coppo since 1998.
  • Riserva Coppo: Alta Langa DOCG Riserva, 80% Pinot Nero, 20% Chardonnay, Sparkling. The Riserva Coppo is the winery's most important sparkling wine. With its great mineral complexity and powerful structure, this is a spumante that can withstand time.
  • Riserva del Fondatore Piero Coppo: Alta Langa DOCG Riserva, 60% Pinot Nero, 40% Chardonnay, Sparkling. The rarest sparkling wine, the limited number of bottles are dedicated to Piero Coppo, founder of the winery. This prestigious Riserva is produced only in years with exceptional vintages. Of the sparkling wines, this…
  • Riserva RdF: Nizza DOCG Riserva, Barbera, Red. RdF, the highest interpretation of the Barbera variety by Coppo since 1998.
  • Tenuta La Rocca: Gavi DOCG, Cortese, White. Coppo has managed the Tenuta La Rocca in Monterotondo in the town of Gavi since the mid-1980s. Gavi is made entirely from the Cortese grape, one of the region's oldest native varieties. Gavi La Rocca comes from…
