Massimo Abbate
Massimo Abbate runs a small family estate in Castagnole Lanze, a village on the line where Monferrato gives way to the Langhe. His parents, Claudio and Anna, bought vineyards in the 1980s and sold grapes; Massimo, an oenologist born in 1983 who trained in Alba and worked as a consultant for ten years, took over in 2015. He now farms 8.5 hectares across Castagnole Lanze, Coazzolo and Neive, planted 60% to Moscato, 20% to Sauvignon Blanc and 20% to Barbera and Nebbiolo, and began vinifying part of the harvest himself. The cellar, steel tanks plus oak barrels, was built in 2018, and the first Langhe Nebbiolo and Barbera d'Asti Superiore came out in June 2020: 1,560 bottles, each numbered on the label. Today the range also covers Sauvignon, a Moscato and Sauvignon white, a rosato, a Merlot and Moscato d'Asti. Castagnole Lanze sits in the province of Asti.
