Malvira
Malvira is a family estate in Canale, in the Roero hills on the left bank of the Tanaro, across the river from Alba and the Langhe. Giuseppe Damonte began making wine here in the 1950s, and the winery took the Malvira name in the mid-1970s, after the old building that became its home. Today the third generation runs the estate's 43 hectares: Giacomo in the cellar, Francesco in the vineyard. Its named crus include S.S. Trinita, Renesio, Mombeltramo and Saglietto, farmed organically since the 2017 harvest. Roero Arneis and Roero DOCG built the estate's name, and since 2007 a small plot in La Morra's Boiolo has given Malvira its own Barolo. The family also runs Villa Tiboldi, a small hotel and restaurant nearby, bought in 1995. Roero itself formed under the sea some two to three million years ago, leaving calcareous soils streaked with sand and marine fossils that still mark the area's Arneis and Nebbiolo.
