La Gironda
La Gironda is a family estate above Nizza Monferrato, run by Susanna Galandrino and her husband Alberto. The family had always tended its own vines, but its main business used to be building winemaking machinery, until 2000, when they turned back to wine full time; their first Barbera, La Gena, dates from that year. The vineyards lie on the Bricco di Nizza hill and in the Chiesavecchia hamlet of Calamandrana, where old plantings were recovered and new ones added. Barbera runs through the range as Barbera d'Asti and as Nizza DOCG, alongside a Monferrato DOC red blend, a Piemonte Sauvignon, Moscato d'Asti, Brachetto d'Acqui and a Metodo Classico brut. The estate has held ISO14001 environmental certification since 2004, without chemical herbicides or synthetic products.
Nizza Monferrato sits among the Monferrato hills in the province of Asti, and lends its name to the Nizza DOCG, the stricter, single-variety subzone carved out of the wider Barbera d'Asti appellation in 2014.
