La Caplana

La Caplana

La Caplana is a family winery in Bosio, in the highest part of the Gavi DOCG zone in Alessandria province, run by the Guido family since 1994. Siblings Natalino, an oenologist trained in Alba, and Carmen, who handles sales, founded the estate with husband Luca, an agronomist, building on generations of family winegrowing that survived phylloxera by grafting onto American rootstock. A new generation, Alice, a viticulture and oenology graduate, and cellarman Lorenzo, who took over from his grandfather, a Gavi winemaker in the 1950s, now carries the work forward.

The estate makes Gavi DOCG in several styles, including the stricter Gavi del Comune di Gavi and the Villavecchia bottling, alongside Barbera d'Asti, Dolcetto di Ovada, Chardonnay and a Charmat method Spumante Brut. Winemaking favors soft pressing, cold cryomaceration and hand picked fruit, and the cellar recently revived amphora fermentation for an orange style Gavi. Bosio lies by the Ligurian Apennines, near the Capanne di Marcarolo park.
