Ferrando

Ferrando is a family firm in Ivrea with five generations behind it. Giuseppe Ferrando founded it in 1890 after moving from Acqui to sell Piemontese wines in the Aosta Valley, and Roberto Ferrando runs it today. In 1957 the family began making Carema from Nebbiolo, and in 1964 it built a cellar in Carema itself for making and ageing the wine. They farm 2.5 hectares there and about 4 hectares of Erbaluce, all hand-harvested on glacial moraine soil. The range is two Carema labels, a Nebbiolo and Barbera Canavese Rosso, two still Erbaluce di Caluso, a Metodo Classico sparkling and a Caluso Passito aged four years. Ivrea sits in the Canavese, north of Turin, where Erbaluce is the local white grape. Carema is the last Piemonte village before the Aosta Valley.

  • Caluso Passito: Caluso Passito DOC, Erbaluce 100%, Sweet. Passito from air-dried Erbaluce, aged four years. About 2,000 bottles are produced.
  • Cariola: Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, Erbaluce 100%, White. Dry white from a selection of the best Erbaluce, about 6,000 bottles a year. The estate farms about 4 hectares of Erbaluce.
  • Etichetta Bianca: Carema DOC, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Carema made from 100% Nebbiolo, aged 36 months with 30 in oak. About 7,000 bottles are produced. The estate farms 2.5 hectares in Carema.
  • Etichetta Nera: Carema DOC, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. Carema from selected Nebbiolo, made only in great vintages from the estate vines in Carema. About 3,000 bottles are produced.
  • La Torrazza: Canavese Rosso DOC, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Red. A red blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, about 8,000 bottles a year.
