Elio Altare
Elio Altare has farmed in La Morra since 1948, when Elio's grandfather Giuseppe bought a small holding of about five hectares planted with Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. A trip to Burgundy in January 1976 convinced Elio to change course: shorter skin macerations and French barriques replaced the old large casks, a break so sharp that his father disinherited him before his death in 1985. Elio bought back the family's land and cellar and kept going. Today the estate farms about ten hectares, making roughly 70,000 bottles a year, run with wife Lucia and daughter Silvia. It is best known for single-vineyard Barolo from Arborina, Brunate and Cannubi around La Morra and Barolo, and from Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba, fermented with native yeasts and left unfiltered. La Morra sits on the north-western side of the Barolo DOCG zone, where sandier soils tend to give Nebbiolo a softer, more perfumed style than the denser wines grown around Serralunga to the east.
