Casalone

The Casalone family has farmed vines in Lu e Cuccaro Monferrato since 1734, when Petrus Hieronymus Casalone arrived as a tenant farmer and vine grower for the Marchesi Millo, and nine generations have kept the vineyards since. Ernesto Casalone led the estate from the 1950s, later joined by his sons Pierangelo and Paolo, and stayed a central figure until his death in 2021. Ten hectares climb the Bricco Santa Maria, Morlantino, San Benedetto and Caplëtta hills, farmed under Integrated Agriculture guidelines.

Alongside Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa and Cortese, the family grows Merlot and Pinot Nero, making Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Grignolino and Monferrato Rosso blends. In the 1980s Ernesto and Maria Luisa revived Malvasia Greca, a nearly vanished local grape now registered as Malvasia Moscata, which today yields a dry white, an off-dry white, a passito and a Metodo Classico sparkling wine.
