Vinchio Vaglio
Vinchio Vaglio is a growers' cooperative in the Monferrato hills of Asti, formed in 1959 when nineteen farmers from the long-rival villages of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra pooled their vineyards and built a shared cellar. Around two hundred member families now farm close to 550 hectares, three quarters of it Barbera, alongside Dolcetto, Cortese, Grignolino, Nebbiolo, Brachetto and a few international varieties. Since 1985 the co-op has set aside its oldest plots, some now past eighty years, for the Vigne Vecchie project, and that same old-vine fruit underpins Laudana and Sei Vigne Insynthesis, its Nizza Riserva DOCG. Every member gets one vote regardless of plot size, and since 2023 the winery has held Equalitas certification as a sustainable producer. Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of marl and sandstone ridges south of Asti, has been Barbera's heartland for generations, and many of the region's oldest surviving vineyards are still farmed by its members.
