Domenico Serra
Serra Domenico is a family-run estate on the hills above Agliano Terme, in the Monferrato, farmed by the Serra family for seven generations. Guido Serra founded the business under its own name in 1974 at Cascina dell'Avvocato, the farmhouse his father Giuseppe had bought in 1963; son Domenico took charge in 2002, and grandson Lorenzo joined in 2008, steering production toward wine alone and toward bottling single vineyards separately. The estate farms 18 hectares, 11 under vine and planted almost entirely to grapes native to the region, Barbera above all, alongside Grignolino, Freisa, Dolcetto, Cortese and a little Nebbiolo, worked without herbicide or chemical fertiliser. The range runs from everyday Barbera d'Asti to the single-vineyard Costacasareggio cru, a Nizza, a Grignolino d'Asti, two Cortese whites and a Monferrato Freisa and Dolcetto. Agliano Terme itself lies inside the Nizza DOCG zone, created in 2014 as the strictest appellation for Barbera in the region.
