Marco Porello

Marco Porello

Marco Porello runs this family estate in Canale, in the Roero hills on the left bank of the Tanaro. The family's first vineyards date to the early twentieth century, and in the 1930s Cesare Porello turned a small holding into a wine business. His sons Riccardo and Ettore worked the vines, and Marco, Riccardo's son, has led the estate since 1994. Today it farms 15 hectares and bottles about 120,000 bottles a year. Nebbiolo, Arneis and Favorita grow on sandy soils of marine origin in Vezza d'Alba, while Barbera and the Roero Torretta and San Michele Nebbiolos come from clay-richer, south-west facing slopes in Canale. The range is four reds, three whites, a rosé and a sweet wine. The Roero sits on sands and marls left by the retreat of an ancient sea, which suits Arneis and gives Nebbiolo a lighter, more floral style than in the Langhe.
