La Ghibellina
La Ghibellina is a small family estate in Monterotondo, a hamlet of Gavi at the southern edge of Piemonte, near the Ligurian border. Marina Galli, whose family has long roots in Gavi, and her husband Alberto Ghibellini founded the estate in 2000, drawn by their shared passion for wine and these hills. The property covers about 20 hectares, with roughly 9 hectares planted on south and south-east facing slopes at an average of 300 metres, where the soil turns from calcareous near the hilltop to clay further down. Vineyard and cellar have been organic certified since the 2016 harvest. Cortese is the backbone of the range: two still Gavi DOCG wines and three metodo classico sparklers aged on the lees for up to four years, alongside a Monferrato DOC red blending merlot and barbera and a varietal barbera under the Piemonte DOC. Gavi itself is one of Piemonte's few appellations built on a white grape rather than nebbiolo or barbera.
