Il Poggio di Gavi

Il Poggio di Gavi

Il Poggio di Gavi is a family estate on the Rovereto hill, one of the historic crus of Gavi, run by Francesca Poggio. She left a job in real estate on 31 July 2003 to revive the family cellar, starting from a farmhouse and a few hectares of vines. The first official year, 2004, gave 4,000 bottles; today the cellar fills about 40,000, shipped to almost every market. Her husband Angelo looks after the vineyards and woods, her sister Alessandra runs the wine resort and B&B, and her daughter Giorgia deals with visitors. Cortese leads the range: several still Gavi bottlings, from the bright, young Nuvole to the acacia-aged Sole sul Poggio, plus a metodo classico and an ancestral-method sparkler. Timorasso and Barbera come from Monleale in the Colli Tortonesi. No herbicides or insecticides are used, and the vines are moving to organic. Gavi DOCG is a Cortese appellation in the province of Alessandria, close to the Ligurian coast.
