Giovanni Battista Gillardi

Giovanni Battista Gillardi

Gillardi is a four-generation family farm in the southern Langhe. The first Giovanni Battista left for Provence around 1890, traded wine there, then came home to grow Dolcetto. His son Giacomo bought Cascina Corsaletto in Farigliano in 1923, and the next Giovanni Battista began bottling under the family name in 1980 alongside his son Giacolino, now chief winemaker. New varieties went in from 1989, and the first Gillardi Barolo came out in 2011. The vineyards are farmed organically, with green manure and mechanical weeding only. The family cites 50 hectares and about 50,000 bottles a year, made in two cellars: the historic one at Corsaletto and a small one in the old centre of Barolo. The range runs from old-vine Dolcetto and Nebbiolo to Syrah and Merlot aged in used small barrels. Farigliano lies in the Dogliani zone south of Alba, where Dolcetto is the grape of the DOCG.
