Orsolani

Orsolani

Orsolani has been in the same family in San Giorgio Canavese, in the Canavese hills north of Turin, since 1894, when Giovanni Orsolani and his wife Domenica came back from America and opened an inn, the Locanda Aurora, while Giovanni worked the vines and cellar. Four generations later the family works only in wine, producing around 150,000 bottles a year, nine in ten of them Erbaluce, the grape they call their true love. The estate belongs to the Grandi Cru d'Italia committee. Vineyards are farmed mostly by hand with organic fertilisers and low impact treatments, and the cellar runs on its own photovoltaic power. Orsolani makes a dry Erbaluce di Caluso, two metodo classico Erbaluce spumante cuvees (sparkling Erbaluce was born in this cellar in 1968), a passito and a Canavese Barbera. The Canavese hills are glacial moraines, their sand and stone soils rich in minerals, and Erbaluce di Caluso itself gained protected status in 2009.
