Maurizio Ponchione
Maurizio Ponchione runs this family estate in Govone with his father Bruno, who looks after the vines, and his son Andrea. His grandfather, known as Gundin, started as a sharecropper, bought a single hectare called Pasau and built the winery from there. Today the family farms twelve hectares in the Roero hills, with Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino, Arneis and Chardonnay, and says it uses no herbicides.
The range covers Barbera d'Alba from the Donia and Monfrini vineyards, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Roero and Roero Arneis, Langhe Chardonnay and Arneis, a Metodo Classico brut and an Arneis passito. Vineyards sit at about 300 metres. Govone lies a short drive from Alba, and its Savoy royal castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Tastings are held at the ciabot on Bricco degli Albazzi hill, or in the panoramic tasting room if the weather turns, and only by reservation.

Wines from Maurizio Ponchione
- Donia: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. A Barbera d'Alba made without barriques, in steel with a brief spell in large Slavonian casks to keep the fresh fruit of the grape.
- Gundin: Vino Bianco Passito, Arneis, Sweet. Passito from selected loose Arneis bunches dried for two to three months, aged ten months in barriques.
- Langhe Arneis: Langhe DOC Arneis, Arneis, White. Arneis from the Pasau vineyard on the Langa side of the Roero border, aged in steel.
- Langhe Chardonnay: Langhe DOC Chardonnay, Chardonnay, White. Chardonnay from the Albazzi vineyard, cryomacerated and aged mainly in steel.
- Langhe Dolcetto: Langhe DOC Dolcetto, Dolcetto 100%, Red. Dolcetto from the Albazzi vineyard, planted in 1988 on clay-rich hillside soil and aged in steel.
- Monfrini: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. Barbera from the Monfrini vineyard, aged 16 months in oak.
