Luca Canevaro

Luca Canevaro

Luca Canevaro's estate began in 2016 as an offshoot of his family's older farm in Avolasca, one of the highest villages of the Colli Tortonesi, roughly 400 metres up in the Val Grue. Luca now runs the winery together with Stefano, farming about 10 hectares that have been certified organic since 2001. The range centres on two wines the estate treats as its emblem: Derthona, a 100% Timorasso, and Monleale, a 100% Barbera matured in French oak, alongside several smaller-production reds and whites from Barbera, Croatina, Ciliegiolo, Cortese and Timorasso. Canevaro belongs to FIVI, the Italian federation of independent winemakers. The Colli Tortonesi rise between Lombardy and Liguria from about 170 to 500 metres, split by the Curone, Ossona and Grue valleys, a long-standing wine district where Timorasso, once nearly forgotten, has become the defining white grape.

Wines from Luca Canevaro

  • Ar Taser: Vino Spumante di Qualità Extra Brut, Barbera, Sparkling. A traditional-method sparkling Barbera, pressed gently for free-run must and aged 24 months on the lees before disgorging.
  • Colle Rosso: Vino Rosso, Ciliegiolo 100%, Red. A light, immediate red made with a very brief skin maceration.
  • Derthona "23 54 23": Colli Tortonesi DOC Timorasso, Timorasso 100%, White. A structured, mineral Timorasso from a soil precisely balanced between sand, silt and clay, prized for its vertical, citrus-driven style.
  • Derthona "Cà degli Olmi": Colli Tortonesi DOC Timorasso, Timorasso 100%, White. The estate's benchmark Timorasso from the Cà degli Olmi vineyard, aged 12 months on the lees in steel for a mineral, structured white.
  • Fontana: Colli Tortonesi DOC Barbera, Barbera 100%, Red. The estate's easiest-drinking Barbera, made for early enjoyment with a short maceration and steel ageing only.
  • Garbato: Colli Tortonesi DOC Cortese, Cortese 100%, White. A fresh, floral Cortese, gently pressed and fermented cool to preserve its aromatics.
  • Inbrega: Vino Rosso, Croatina 50%, Bonarda Piemontese 50%, Red. A lightly sparkling, off-dry red made by natural refermentation in the bottle, fresh and easy to drink.
  • Monleale: Colli Tortonesi DOC Monleale, Barbera 100%, Red. The estate's flagship Barbera and one of its two symbol wines, aged 18 months in French oak and further in bottle for an intense, spice-driven style.
  • Norma: Vino Rosso, Croatina 100%, Red. A structured red aged partly in French oak, with a spicy, full-bodied character.
  • Orizzonte: Vino Rosato, Rosé. A light, easy-drinking rosé blended from grapes grown in the estate's cooler, north-facing vineyards.
  • Piccolo Derthona: Vino Bianco, Timorasso, White. A lighter, earlier-drinking sibling to Derthona Cà degli Olmi, refined in steel for just 6 months.
  • Primo: Colli Tortonesi DOC Barbera, Barbera 100%, Red. The estate's reserve red, harvested from a single 60-year-old, south-facing vineyard only in the best years and aged 36 months, part in steel and part in oak.
  • Quota Rosa: Vino Frizzante Rosato, Sparkling. An ancestral-method sparkling rosé, naturally refermented in the bottle, fresh and lively, suited to an aperitif.
