Il Chiosso
Il Chiosso was founded in 2007 in Gattinara, when winemaker Marco Arlunno, already producing Ghemme, joined Carlo Cambieri, an engineer who owned and farmed vineyards there. The two now work parcels scattered across Alto Piemonte, on both banks of the Sesia river that divides the Gattinara and Ghemme hills, drawing fruit from long established crus in Gattinara, Ghemme and Fara. Only the area's native varieties are planted: Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Uva Rara. Gattinara is vinified as pure Nebbiolo, while the Ghemme carries a small share of Vespolina to set the two wines further apart. The range spans the lighter Colline Novaresi wines and Ficorosso up to Gattinara DOCG, the single vineyard Galizja bottling, and an oak aged Riserva. Every label carries an astrolabe, the old instrument for reading the sky.
Gattinara and Ghemme, facing each other across the Sesia, are among the oldest Nebbiolo appellations in the northern reaches of Piemonte, well north of the better known Langhe.
