Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno began as a café and wine business in Monforte d'Alba in 1908. His son Giovanni made the first Monfortino, a Barolo Riserva from the early 1920s that is aged for years before release, at a time when most Barolo was sold young in demijohn. In 1974 Giovanni bought the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, ending decades of buying grapes from local growers. His son Roberto Conterno, the third generation, added the neighbouring Cerretta vineyard in 2008 and Arione more recently.

The estate works in the traditional way: long fermentations in wood, never stainless steel, and ageing in large Slavonian and Austrian oak botti. Monfortino is released after seven years of ageing and is made only in selected vintages.

Wines from Giacomo Conterno

  • Arione: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Arione sits beside the Francia vineyard and, since 2015, a portion of its fruit has also gone into Monfortino in select vintages.
  • Cerretta: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Acquired in 2008, Cerretta sits on the opposite side of Serralunga d'Alba from Francia, adding a second distinct single-vineyard Barolo to the estate.
  • Francia: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. Grown alongside the Nebbiolo in the Francia vineyard, this Barbera is considered one of the Langhe's finest and most age-worthy examples of the grape.
  • Francia: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Francia (known as Cascina Francia until a 2010 labelling law change) has been the Conterno family's home vineyard since Giovanni Conterno purchased it in 1974, and produces both the estate's standard Barolo and its…
  • Monfortino Riserva: Barolo Riserva DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. First made after Giacomo Conterno returned from the First World War, Monfortino was one of the earliest Barolos built for serious ageing, named for the family's home village of Monforte d'Alba.
