Cascina Gentile

Cascina Gentile

Cascina Gentile is a small family estate in Capriata d'Orba, in the Alto Monferrato hills on the Liguria side of Alessandria province. Daniele Oddone has run it since 2009, after the oenology school in Alba, and moved it to organic farming straight away. The cellar was built in the mid-1970s by his family, with the first bottles in 1982, and the estate now has 11 hectares and about 35,000 bottles, still selling part of its grapes. Vineyards at Gazzolo, Barcanello and Cascinotto sit on a plateau of about 250 metres, on clay with silt and plenty of stones, and since 2014 Oddone also works vines at Cassano Spinola in the Colli Tortonesi, where Derthona Timorasso began in 2015. The range runs from Gavi and Ovada Dolcetto to two Barberas, two sparklers and a dried-grape sweet wine. Capriata d'Orba lies between the Gavi and Ovada zones, which overlap along the road past the cellar. Oddone chairs the Ovada DOCG consortium.
