Paola Badino

Paola Badino

Casa Nuova is the family farm of Paola Badino, a fourth-generation grower and great-granddaughter of Francesco Badino, who bought the first plot and began building the house in 1886. It sits on a small hill at San Giacomo, in the commune of Rocca Grimalda, looking toward Silvano d'Orba and the Ligurian Apennines. Most of the vines are over 90 years old and are hand-harvested; Paola moved the vineyards to organic farming in 2015, with certification from the 2018 harvest. The cellar is entirely underground, built under the house and extended in the early 1900s, and the farm has run on its own solar panels since 2012. The range is short and local: Dolcetto d'Ovada, an Ovada DOCG aged in steel, Barbera del Monferrato and a Rosé. Rocca Grimalda lies in the province of Alessandria, in the Ovada wine area, where Dolcetto is the benchmark red.
