Mongioia

Mongioia

Mongioia is a family winery in Valdivilla, a hamlet of Santo Stefano Belbo, in the Moscato country on the Cuneo side of the Langhe. Riccardo Bianco, owner, oenologist and agronomist, is the sixth generation, following his father Marco and grandfather Mario. Santo Stefano Belbo is also the village where Cesare Pavese was born.

The cellar treats Moscato as a wine that can age: it has aged it in bottle since 1998 and thins the bunches to push ripeness. Riccardo patented the fermentation of sweet Moscato in terracotta amphora, which produced Moscata, and revived drop-by-drop filtration through cotton sacks for L'Astralis. He also makes dry Moscato, still (Leonhard) and as a traditional-method extra brut (Meramentae), alongside Langhe Nebbiolo and Langhe Arneis. The vineyards are farmed organically and the cellar runs on renewable electricity.
