La Guardia

La Guardia

La Guardia is the Priarone family's estate at Morsasco, in the Alto Monferrato hills of the province of Alessandria, not far from Ovada. The slopes were already under vines when the property belonged to Prince Centurione and formed part of Morsasco castle. The Priarones took it over in the 1960s with seven hectares and, through later purchases, now farm about 35 hectares, all in vines, including the 13 hectares of Villa Delfini.

The vineyards form a sunny natural amphitheatre of tufa and limestone soils, mostly facing south-west and trained to guyot at 4,500 vines per hectare. Dolcetto, Barbera, Albarossa, Brachetto and Cortese sit alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery stands among the vines, and the 17th-century cellars of Villa Delfini hold the barriques for the main reds.
