Cascina Val del Prete

Cascina Val del Prete

Cascina Val del Prete is a family estate in Priocca, a village on the Roero side of the Tanaro river in the province of Cuneo. Bartolomeo Roagna bought the farmhouse in 1977 and planted the first vineyards of Barbera and Nebbiolo, later adding Arneis, the area's native white variety. His son Mario took over in 1995, gave up the family's earlier fruit growing and livestock, and moved the estate's 10 hectares to natural farming, relying on indigenous yeasts and a light hand in the cellar. Giovanni, the third generation, joined in 2010. The vineyards sit on the hill behind the farmhouse, in the Madonna delle Grazie area, and on Bricco Gatti. From here come Roero Arneis and Roero Nebbiolo, including a long aged Riserva, alongside Barbera d'Alba. Priocca lies at the Roero's northwestern edge, where the soils turn more clay and limestone than the sandier ground typical of the rest of the appellation.
